The bulk of my paintings are commissioned pieces. While I’m trying really, really hard to find my own artistic vision, voice, and perspective, the majority of my time is still spent making sure I’m executing someone else’s artistic vision, voice, and perspective in the right way. While this may be unfulfilling for a lot of artists, I feel completely differently.
Making these paintings for people from all walks of life and all different areas of the country has been such a privilege. I am being entrusted with creating something that will hang in their homes, become part of their lives, and capture a moment, a memory, a place, thing or idea that has been or will be an integral and important part of their lives. The work that I create is so much more theirs than it will ever be mine, and I’m totally OK with that.
Being able to spend my hours painting is something that I love to do and would do it no matter what! But meeting people in dark parking lots to give them their painting and see their reaction when they hold it in their hands for the first time – it’s a feeling like no other! Or the excitement I have when I bring a painting to FedEx, knowing that I’ll never see it again, but it’s recipient will look at it every day of their lives – I feel like I’m shipping a piece of my heart in the box right along with it!
While I’m trying to slowly but surely build my “brand identity” and have a consistent vision and look-and-feel of art and content that I’m creating for Molly Alone (I’ve listened to too many creative entrepreneur podcasts, can ya tell?), I’ll never shy away from the opportunity of making something special for you. Because you teach me more about art than anything I could dream up!
