I’m not the first to say that kids have a lot to teach us. But for real, they have a lot to teach us. They plug into the illogical, the mysterious, the wonderland everytime they pick up a toy. They are curious, they are inhibited, they are energized by everything.
I get into a similar mindset whenever I have to think creatively about anything. Kids are never worried about anything looking perfect – they are all about process. For a person that has many, many insecurties, it’s important for me to remind myself to approach my work with this same fearlessness and confidence.
A few ways to act like a kid on the daily:
- Laugh at your own jokes – Most kids can not finish a joke without laughing, nor should you! Tap into the silly, the light-heartedness, the pure happiness of your own stories and your own life. That kind of bliss is contagious.
- Don’t tell yourself “NO” – Part of being a parent is teaching your child boundaries, and I totally get that. We’d all be idiots if our parents didn’t tell us “No” once in a while. But stop telling yourself “No” when it comes to things you want to do. Stay in bed and take a nap. Watch that same movie for the 100th time. Say that crazy idea out loud to someone. Stop putting yourself in a playpen
- Color on everything – That one I mean completely literally.
